A Day Sail With Team Dennis Conner

Team Dennis Conner will wrap up six months of training and testing from their base on Terminal Island in Los Angeles Harbor late this month and ship their two new Stars & Stripes boats, USA 66 and USA 77, to New Zealand for the start of the Louis Vuitton Cup challenger trials for the America's Cup on Oct. 1. YachtRacing.com spent part of a recent day sailing with the boats in the San Pedro Channel.

The base at the APL container terminal has been small, humble but functional. Here the "Shamu" sling transfers sails from the sail loft (right) to the boats. The Stars & Stripes Cupmobile commutes daily between San Diego and the base, transporting crew and shore team from their homes.
Helmsman Ken Read takes his turn on the pedestal to help hoist the main sail. What a guy! Crew member Morgan Trubovich isn't concerned about sailors' superstition about bananas on a boat.
USA 77 hoists its headsail to start the day's trials as it passes the Angels Gate lighthouse below the Palos Verdes Peninsula. A cruising boat dismasted outside L.A. Harbor as USA 66 sailed by.
Ken Read alerts the Stars & Stripes chase boats to lend assistance, if necessary, to the dismasted cruiser. Also shown: Mick Harvey (right) and Rick Burnham. Veteran bowman Jerry Kirby has his son Rome, 13, following in his footsteps at the front of the boat.
The crew of USA 77 poses for a group picture. USA 77, with Terry Hutchinson driving, powers up in a 20-knot breeze.
Matt Gregory crunches the performance numbers on his waterproof laptop with USA 66 well heeled on port tack. With USA 77 in background, USA 66 bowman Greg Gendell swings out to switch sheets on the end of the spinnaker pole.
Stars & Stripes boats sail parallel courses for miles at a time to determine performance data. When the boat tacks, everyone's moves are choreographed. As helmsman Ken Read switches wheels, Rick Burnham and Mick Harvey man the grinding pedestal and Matt Gregory (right) resets the runners. Main sail trimmer Ben Mitchell is in red cap at left.
