LONG
BEACH, Calif.---Sailors converged from all over
Southern California on a chilly weekend to race
for their Thanksgiving dinners in Alamitos Bay
Yacht Club's annual Turkey Day Regatta.

There
were more than 350 people sailing 237 boats in
22 classes. There were no trophies, only turkeys
for the winners, who raced for the birds on two
outside courses on Long Beach's outer harbor and
one on the small inside bay fronting the club.
There
were several perfect records posted: Chris Barnard
of Newport Harbor YC among 19 Sabot As, Dave Fell
of Santa Barbara YC in PHRF, Philip Infelise,
ABYC, with his Santana 20 in Portsmouth, and son-father
Barrett and Randy Sprout, California YC, in Coronado
15s.
The
event is notorious for unpredictable conditions,
and this year greeted competitors on Saturday
with cool Santa Ana desert winds blowing 15 knots
from the southeast, contrary to the venue's reputation
for southwesterly sea breezes. Then, after overnight
thunder and rain, Sunday dawned crystal clear
and windy from the northeast, but then slipped
under an overcast as the wind faded to ultra light.
But
the race committees persevered to click off enough
racing for a valid event. Every class managed
five or six races, and there was only one protest
all weekend.
