Phuket
To Singapore Yacht Race - A Prelude Race To The
Singapore International Yacht Challenge
The
Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) recently
announced at the RSYC Regatta 2004 Prize Presentation
& Dinner in late July that it is planning
for a new major yachting event for January 2005.
The event is designed to introduce two new elements
to South East Asian yacht racing:
1) Long distance (500+ nautical miles) multi-day
coastal racing and 2) Significant prize money.
A grand new trophy on par with RSYC’s Sir
Thomas Lipton Cup (1926) is being commissioned
for this event and will be endorsed as the Singapore
President’s Cup.
The
event will be a non-stop race from Phuket to Singapore
to be held in January in between the King’s
Cup and the Singapore Straits Regatta. The initial
running of this race will be January 2005, tentatively
scheduled for 8 to 15 January 2005. This initial
race will be known as the “Phuket to Singapore
Yacht Race” and will act as a prelude to
the inaugural “Singapore International Yacht
Challenge (SIYC) for the Singapore President’s
Cup” to be held in January 2006.
The
race will be run as a single RORC-IRC class, with
prize money awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and line
honours. The prelude race in 2005 will see a cash
purse currently proposed at S$10,000 while the
SIYC event in 2006 has a proposed purse of S$100,000.
A notice of race will be available by early September
2004 and any inquiries about the event can be
