TEAM
BUNDOCK/HOWDEN LEADS TEXEL DUTCH OPEN 2003
Record
attempt fails
Den Burg, June 18th 2003 – After the first
racing day of the Texel Dutch Open 2003, Darren
Bundock (AUS) and Will Howden (GBR) are in the
lead. They won the two sailed races, followed
by the Australian Cavin Colby and Cori Camenisch
from Swiss. The Dutch Olympic Tornado team Sven
Karsenbarg and Mischa Heemskerk are in third position
in the overall ranking of Wednesday June18th.
The only Texel participant Dirk Pool is in lead
of the small boats.
The
World Champion Tornado, Darren Bundock, sails
occasionally with the new coach of Dutch Tornado
team Booth/Dercksen, Will Howden. Not on a Tornado,
but with a Hobie Tiger. Both men consider the
Texel Dutch Open as a training for the F18 Worlds
in July 2003. Bundock: “Texel is well-known
for its breeze. After the light conditions of
the European Championship Tornado, we finally
could sail with good wind today. Due to the Texel
rating it is difficult to know your position on
the water. In both races Sven and Mischa crossed
the finish line in first position, but after recalculation
with the handicap, we ended up ahead of them.”
Last year, the Australian won the Texel Dutch
Open with Luca Remagnino.
Record
attempt:
Today’s
record attempt of team Larsen/Pols and team Bouscholte/Kenbeek
failed. They started with a west wind, force three,
but it decreased on the Wadden Sea. Larsen: “We
had to sit on the trampoline for at least fifteen
minutes. That is killing for an attempt on the
record.” Although Larsen/Pols took the lead
soon, they could not break the record. Duo to
a collision with a breakwater, they broke their
dagger board, which cost several minutes. Team
Larsen/Pols crossed the finish line after 2 hours
47 minutes and 57 seconds. Bouscholte/Kenbeek
sr. needed 2 hours 51 minutes and 48 seconds.
Bouscholte: “This was a good training. There
is more wind at them moment, so I will again take
an attempt on the record tomorrow.” He will
try his luck with Ruurd van Wieren, with whom
he will also sail the Zwitserleven Round Texel.
The Round Texel record remains at 02:30:36 hours.
On
Thursday June 19th, two races are scheduled. The
first start is at 9:55 hours. The traditional
Horstocht starts at 13:00 hours. The other sponsors
of the Zwitserleven Round Texel are: Amstel, Holkema
Group, Komatsu, de Kolonist, MagicMinds Media,
Nissan, TNG Swiss Watches, Teso, VVV Texel and
the Mondriaan Onderwijsgroep.
