Italian
Championship IMS 2003 In Trieste - Only One Of
The Two Races Finished Today
Trieste, Italy 25th August 2003
Today marked the first day of the Italian IMS
Championships in Trieste, Italy. It was a day
characterized by constant wind shifts from 7/8
knots to strong currents of 12/16 knots of wind
coming from north-east, also called the typical
wind of Trieste the famous Bora. Due to the inconstant
wind shifts, the race committee decided to postpone
the start until 16 o’clock-originally given
at 12, so only one race was disputed on the first
day, instead of the two in the program of events.
It
was an unlucky day for the IMS World Champions,
“Telefonica Movistar”, driven by the
owner Giorgio Goldoni, with a whole team of locals
at his side.
Among
this team of experts, is Andrea Marengo, at the
halyards, who is also taking care of the sails
program on the boat. Andrea’s palmarès
also includes his collaboration as sail-maker
in the America’s Cup campaigns for “Il
Moro di Venezia” and “LunaRossa 2000”.
First
place in the overall results shows “X-Sport”
as the winner, followed by “Wind”
and “Man”. Notable is the local talent,
Vasco Vascotto with his new crew on “Brava
Q8” in fourth place.
“Telefonica
Movistar”, the first prototype of the Rodman
42, designed by Vrolijk, same designer of the
“Alinghi” boat during the last edition
of the America’s Cup, was optimised to guarantee
optimal results during this Championship.
Alberto
Leghissa, team manager of “Telefonica Movistar”,
commented - “ we are very happy about our
results in this IMS season, having won the Worlds
in Capri and a good second place at the European
Championships. We are surely in the group of favourites
for this Italian Championship. We have excellent
speed with this boat and a very determined team,
who has been sailing together for many years.
Also, being from Trieste, and knowing the Gulf
very well, we can definitely come out on top.”
Today
the start of the race is expected at 12 o’clock.
Among
the members of the crew are:
Fulvio
Manuelli, Andrea Marengo, Andrea Bussani, Alberto
Leghista, Daniele Augusti e Alessandro Alberti
from Trieste and it’s immediate surroundings.
G.B. Ballico from Udine. Riccardo Guerra, e Giorgio
Goldoni from Treviso. Federico
Boldrin from Mestre, Venice
