17TH
MARINA DEL REY TO PUERTO VALLARTA INTERNATIONAL
YACHT RACE
Del Rey Yacht Club
Feb. 15, 2003 For Immediate Release
LOCOMOTION,
SORCERY ALSO SEE A RECORD IN THE WIND
MARINA
DEL REY, Calif.---Pyewacket isn't the only boat
thinking about a record in Del Rey Yacht Club's
17th biennial race to Puerto Vallarta. Winslow
Lincoln's Locomotion, an Andrews 45 skippered
by Keith Kilpatrick, and Jake Wood's Sorcery,
a Mull 82, were ahead of Joss's 1985 pace as Saturday
dawned on their third day at sea.
The
two boats in PHRF A class started Thursday, a
day ahead of Roy Disney's Reichel/Pugh 75, which
sailed 188 nautical miles in the 20 hours before
its first position report. Locomotion and Sorcery
tallied 260 and 247 miles, respectively, on their
first 24-hour logs, as they approached the halfway
point in the 1,125-mile race.
Locomotion
was averaging 10.2 knots for the race, sorcery
9.5. Joss, Richard and Camille Daniels' MacGregor
65, averaged 9.45 knots when it set the long-standing
record of 4 days 23 hours 0 minutes 4 seconds.
Winds were ideal for spinnaker runs: 15 knots
from north-northwest and forecast to continue
as far as Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip of
the Baja California peninsula.
From
there, however, projections were anyone's guess.
Reports were of squalls but only moderate winds
in the Gulf of California for the crossing to
Puerto Vallarta on the mainland. Race official
Tom Redler was encouraged by the reports but cautiously
optimistic about records.
"We've
been through this before," he said, "when
boats were on the pace to break Joss's record
and then the wind shut down across the gulf. We'll
have a better idea in a couple of days."
At
its present pace, Locomotion would finish at 3:35
a.m. PST Tuesday, with Sorcery eight hours behind.
Pyewacket's ETA was for early afternoon Wednesday
but was based only on its first day of sailing
when it averaged 9.3 knots.
Two
Santa Cruz 50s---Bay Wolf, chartered by Richard
Parlette, and Jack Taylor's Horizon---were the
overall midway pacesetters after averaging 9.5
and 9.7 knots, respectively, into their fourth
days. They started Wednesday in PHRF B class.
The
Salsa Division boats, now numbering 13 since Principessa's
withdrawal, also were sailing in 15 knots of northwesterly
winds after restarting from their first of three
scheduled layovers at Turtle Bay late Thursday
motoring. Only Valerie K, Ron Hoskin's Columbia
43 from Long Beach, reported using its engine,
but only for one hour.
Immediately
after the completion of the race, North Sails
and the Mexican Sailing Association are sponsoring
a new five-day regatta in Banderas Bay called
Vallarta Race Week. All Marina del Rey-Puerto
Vallarta participants were invited to take part.
