Annual Yacht Clubs Of Long Beach Charity Regatta
- Weather Forecast Wrong, But Close Racing Won Out
September
28, 2003 (LONG BEACH, CA) – It was a gray
and foggy morning… Similar words have been
printed in many a horror story, but for the fleets
participating in the 17th running of the Annual
Yacht Clubs of Long Beach Charity Regatta held in
the waters just out of Alamitos Bay, it wasn’t
a deterrent to be competitive on the race course.

At
the PHRF venue which made up roughly half of the
entire participants hosted 35 boats, the big winners
for the day were “Whiplash” owned by
Ray Godwin in the “Spinnaker A” fleet
who knocked out his considerably faster opponent,
“Gold Digger” by two minutes on corrected
time. In the “B” fleet, it was “Southern
Comfort” owned by Cole Price putting away
“Cahoots”. The two non-spinnaker fleets
were won by “Latitude”, Bill Barham
and “Wind Haven”, Ross Hendricks.
Meanwhile,
the One-Design fleets were mixing it up at another
venue. The Cal 25 and Cal 20 fleets were reveling
in the light conditions and provided some of the
closest competition of the day. In the Cal 25 fleet
it was “Jane’s Addiction” winning
on a 2, 1 record, and in the Cal 20 fleet “Hot
Pink” took their series 1, 1. The new Hobie
Tigers were out in a good-sized fleet with 5 boats,
and two “cruisers” participated: “Willow
Wind”, first and “Island Star”
second.
Inside
the protected waters of Alamitos Bay, the dinghy
classes comprised of “A, B, and Senior”
Sabot fleets and a Lido fleet dueled it out. The
kids were in control of the “A” and
“B” fleets with a double dose of Ian;
Ian Paice (1, 3, 2) and Ian Fournier (2, 3, 1) respectively.
The Senior fleet was dominated by Mary Riddick with
a 1, 4, 1 record for the day. In the two boat Lido
fleet, John and Liz Bergan beat out Don and Christine
Taugher.
The
racing was followed by a wonderful reception at
the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, where the trophy presentations
took place. It was at the trophy presentation that
the “true” winning boat of the day was
announced. The crew of “Yellow Jacket”
a Santa Cruz 27 from Shoreline Yacht Club and skippered
by Commodore Steve Anderson, won the Crew Challenge
award by raising over $550 for the charity from
donations within their crew.
