ABOUT THE CHILDREN'S CLINIC:

The Children's Clinic, Serving Children and Their Families (TCC), founded in 1939 by a group of local physicians and community leaders, is an independent non-profit licensed community clinic dedicated to providing comprehensive health care in a culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate manner to medically underserved, low-income and high-risk populations in Long Beach and surrounding communities.

WHO DO THEY SERVE?
TCC provides care for the most underserved in the community. To be eligible for services, a child or adult must be uninsured, underinsured, or a Medi-Cal recipient. Families are asked to contribute to their care according to a sliding fee scale, yet no one is refused care because of an inability to pay.

WHAT DO THEY PROVIDE?
The Children's Clinic provides medical care and counseling for well-child visits; acute and chronic care; community outreach and education; immunizations; laboratory testing; prescribed medications; linkage to community resources; evening and Saturday morning hours; and an Adult Clinic. TCC continues to serve as a true medical home with 24- hour telephone accessibility to staff pediatricians and care to children who are hospitalized. For the 2001 fiscal year, TCC provided:

  • 35,630 General and primary care visits - an estimated 100,000 encounters
  • 1,809 Specialty care visits including pediatric ophthalmology, neurology, allergy, and car, nose and throat
  • 21,800 Medications and prescriptions
  • 20,500 Immunizations
  • Brighter Tomorrows at International Elementary School, a partnership with TCC, the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), YMCA, Greater Long Beach Child Guidance Center, and the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (LBDHHS), which provides on-site health care, health education, physical fitness and mental health services to students and siblings.
  • Reach Out and Read, a collaborative with TCC, Beach Cities Reading Association and AmeriCorp, which provides literacy activities for children six months to five years of age.
  • Knight Foundation Immunization Awareness Project, a partnership with TCC, the LBDHHS and the LBUSD designed to increase immunization awareness in the community through creating public relations and health education materials in English, Spanish and Khmer.
