Sardinia Cup 2002
Porto Cervo, 17th September 2002
Press Release Sardinia 1
With the first races, the thirteenth
edition of the Sardinia Cup 2002 will officially start tomorrow,
the 18th of September. The Sardinia Cup is considered one
of the most important events at an international level where
many top athletes participate.
The Sardinia Cup was created by the
Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in 1978.The prestigious trophy,
awarded by His Highness the Aga Khan (who is also the President
of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda) is given to the strongest
of the teams participating. The 2002 edition of the Sardinia
Cup is a little different from the past editions: no more
there are three boats participating in each group for each
nation: this year every group is made up of two boats: one
Farr 40 One Design and one IMS yacht. Surely the great yachts
that will definitely make this event special are “BravaQ8”,
“Breeze”, “Mandrake”, “Pinta”
and “Dida V” (in 1978 this last one won the first
edition of the Sardinia Cup for the Italian team with “Yena”
and “Vanina”) and of course King of Spain Juan
Carlos’ s “Bribon”, last edition’s
winner.
It was “Bribon” for Spain
who first entered this edition of the Sardinia Cup 2002, along
with the other teams coming from Germany, USA, Holland, Norway,
and, of course, Italy.
Of course, with such an event, many
top level athletes can’t be forgotten. Among some of
the most competitive sailors participating are Vascotto on
“Italtel”, Antonio Sodo Migliori aboard “Wind”,
Michael Illbruck with “Nela”, Pasquale Landolfi
(along with his inseparable Massimo Mezzaroma) on “BravaQ8”,
Alberto Signorini aboard “Giacomelli Sport”, George
Andreadis on “Atalanti XI” and of course Juan
Carlos on his “Bribon”.
Tomorrow, the event begins with two
races, both upwind/downwind.
