Comunicato Stampa Sardinia 2
“North Sea” has been awarded
the victory of today, the first day of racing for the XIII
edition of the Sardinia Cup, closing event for the season
2002, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. This event
is particularly different from the previous years, where two
boats make up a team for each country; one must be a Farr
40 One Design and the other an IMS boat. “North Sea”
won the first race of five, and is now leading the class,
it is made up of Michael Illbruck’s German team “Nela”
and the Dutch boat belonging to Peter De Ridder “Mean
Machine”. In second place overall today is “Italy
Yellow” made up of the two “Giacomelli Sport”
boats, belonging to Alberto Signorini and Stefano Spangaro,
while in the third place the Spanish team, still awaiting
the arrival of His Highness the King of Spain (arriving 19th
of September), with “Bribon” and “Telefonica
Movistar”.

Today’s race , saw the start of
both IMS boats and Farr 40’s both on the same starting
line. The weather conditions for today were characterized
by a south easterly wind of about 15-17 knots, and it put
many of these teams to the test. There were two upwind/downwind
races and each was about 8 miles long.
The first race was dominated by the
IMS boat belonging to Stefano Spangaro, “Giacomelli
Sport”, a Grand Soleil 44, which won both the first
race and the second, as did the German boat “Nela”
for the Farr 40 division. As for the other Italian team, “Italy
Blue”, they were a little less lucky. The skipper of
“Italtel”, Vasco Vascotto, had to stay still at
the first upwind mark due to an error in taking down the spinnaker,
and this made him lose precious minutes in the race.
Some great races were done by his team
mate Massimo Mezzaroma, driver of “Wind” ( with
Lorenzo Bressani as the tactician), who came third in the
first race and fourth in the second. Tomorrow, racing continues
with two other upwind/ downwind courses.
