HARVARD
UNIVERSITY TAKES HUGE LEAD DURING SECOND DAY OF
2003 ICSA/GILL NORTH AMERICAN COED DINGHY CHAMPIONSHIP
DETROIT,
MICHIGAN (June 9, 2003) - Harvard University (Cambridge,
Mass.) crushed the competition during the second
day of the 2003 Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association
(ICSA) / Gill North American Coed Dinghy Championship
at Bayview Yacht Club. With 108 points, they have
a 48-point lead over second place St. Mary's College's
(St. Mary's City, Md.) 156 point tally. University
of Hawaii (Honolulu, Hawaii) is in third place
with 173 points.
Puffy
12-15 knot winds made for excellent sailing on
Lake St. Clair. 8 races were completed in each
division today. 14 A-division and 12 B-division
races have now been completed. 18 races are planned
in each division for the series which ends tomorrow.
Sailors have been racing in new Vanguard 420s
provided by Vanguard Sailboats (Portsmouth, R.I.),
a partner in the ICSA Growth and Development Project.
The regatta hosts are the University of Michigan
and the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association.
Harvard
University is fresh off winning the ICSA North
American Team Racing Championship on Saturday,
and is on the verge of winning the school's first
dinghy title since 1974. The Crimson placed second
in last year's event in Hawaii. Coach Mike O'Connor
(Foxboro, Mass.) said his team "had great
starts" today as well as "a pretty serious
speed advantage." The Crimson posted 8 winning
races today, placed second in three more, and
are leading both divisions. Senior Clay Bischoff
(Miami, Fla.) has sailed with senior Lema Kikuchi
(Bethesda, Md.) and sophomore David Darst (Greenwich,
Ct.) in the A-division. In B-division, junior
Cardwell Potts (New Orleans, La.) has sailed with
senior Michelle Yu (Mountain View, Calif.) and
junior Diana Rodin (West Roxbury, Mass.)
At
press time, a number of protests were still pending
from today's racing. Scores will likely change
once protests have been settled.
