Grands
Records - Re-crossing 40° South
10
April 21:05
At
17:17 GMT today, Saturday 10 April (19:17 French
time), Geronimo’s position was 40°36S,
51°32W. Olivier de Kersauson’s trimaran
was then making a true speed of 19 knots on a
northeasterly heading.
At
the time of this position fix, the wind was still
in the northwest and blowing at 19 knots. This
wind speed - Force 5 on the Beaufort Scale (cf.
our glossary in the “i.e.” section)
- should finally enable Geronimo to exploit her
full power and improve her rate of progress on
this 45th day at sea.
Temperatures
have been rising constantly for the last 2 days,
with the water temperature now at 21°C and
the air at 19°C. Close to re-crossing the
40°S parallel at the time this position fix
was taken, the Cap Gemini and Schneider Electric
crew have now escaped completely from the influence
of the South Atlantic and are approaching subtropical
waters at some speed.
