In
a phone conversation earlier today (Friday), Olivier
de Kersauson's router Pierre Lasnier spoke about
the conditions now being experienced by the Cap
Gemini and Schneider Electric crew.
"Geronimo
is subject to the influence of a depression that
originated inside the south polar circle around
60°/ 65° S and has moved north into warmer
areas at a rate of 35 knots. The crew will have
bad weather until this 980 millibar system progresses
further north ahead of them".
"It's
during the period from now (16:00 Paris time,
ed.) until 18:00 GMT that they will be most exposed,
because they are in the most active part of the
system. After that, the wind should drop and move
around to the south".
"Olivier
de Kersauson and his crew are still following
a route at a tangent to the storm zone; yesterday,
I advised them to slow down to avoid being too
roughly treated".
"Once
the depression reaches 47°30S 105°W, it
will probably turn right. It should then return
south-east and could cross our route again before
the Horn".
When
Pierre Lasnier says "our route" it's
because he really is alongside Olivier de Kersauson
and his crew all the way. Although shore-based,
the router is intimately involved in all the difficult
choices required to negotiate this extreme weather
situation, which Geronimo's skipper today described
as downright hostile.
And
he does know what he's talking about!
