Grands
Records - Close-hauled
26
March 19:10
The
Cap Gemini and Schneider Electric trimaran progressed
more slowly on Day 29, covering only 158 nautical
miles point-to-point in the first 12 hours of
the day.
The
fix taken at 17:14 GMT today (Friday 26 March)
showed Geronimo's position to be 53°17S, 155°38E,
at which time she was making a spot actual speed
of 12.1 knots.
Despite
having to cope with a headwind of 30 knots and
more, forcing the boat to sail close-hauled, the
helmsmen and the rest of his watch were able to
maintain a true heading of 94°, which should
route the trimaran as directly as possible to
the antimeridian.
Given
these conditions, Olivier de Kersauson and his
crew naturally hope to pick up the following winds
of a westerly system at the earliest opportunity.
