Grands
Records - Geronimo Heads Due East
12 March 14:30
An
intermediate position given at 11:16 GMT today,
Friday 12 March 2004, shows that Geronimo has
been heading due east for the last few hours.
The onboard GPS shows a heading of 90° precisely.
The
Cap Gemini and Schneider Electric trimaran's position
at this time was 43°52S, 05°11W, having
covered 280.8 nautical miles in 12 hours at an
average speed of 23.40 knots.
Olivier
de Kersauson and his crew are therefore applying
to the letter the decision we reported earlier
to avoid going too far south due to the risk of
ice near the Antarctic convergence zone, where
icebergs have been observed in the Atlantic between
45° and 48°S.
Geronimo will certainly head south of the 50th
parallel soon, after she passes the longitude
of the Cape of Good Hope, which marks the entrance
to the Indian Ocean, at which point the boundary
of the Antarctic convergence zone moves much further
south.
