Racing, Part Two, Set for Tomorrow:
New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex

Avalanche, a Farr 395 owned by Craig Albrecht of Glen Head, N.Y., is competing in both halves of the New York Yacht Club’s Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex. After finishing third in its class in the handicap-racing segment, which concluded Tuesday, Avalanche stayed in Newport to continue racing in the one-design segment, which begins Friday and continues through Sunday. Ninety-two boats have entered.

NEWPORT, R.I. (July 18, 2002) -- The New York Yacht Club’s Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex begins its second half tomorrow, with 93 boats competing in ten one-design classes. Race Week’s first half hosted over 600 sailors competing in handicap-racing classes. In a unique multiple-segment structure, the regatta now is accommodating several hundred more sailors, some of whom have stayed on from the first half and others who have just arrived to sail over the next three days.

“It was a first for us and for sailing,” said New York Yacht Club Commodore Charlie Dana about the format, “but now this event is in its third biennial running and it works very well.”

This part of Race Week will serve as the J/44 North Americans, 1D35 East Coast Regional Championship, Mumm 30 North American Championship and J/35 New England Championship. Remaining one-design classes are Farr 40, Farr 395, J/80, J/105, J/120 and Melges 24.

Among the world-class sailors competing will be three-time Star-class Olympic medallist and Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Mark Reynolds of San Diego, Calif., who will sail aboard the Farr 40 Le Renard.
