Carrera Finds its
Pace Early:
NEWPORT, R.I. (July 13, 2002) –
The Farr 60 Carrera owned by Joe Dockery of Stamford, Conn.,
made big strides on the first day of the
New York Yacht Club's Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex,
even though Dockery was absent and the boat itself "hadn't
sailed an inshore race all season." With Annapolis,
Md.'s Chris Larson steering and Newport, R.I.'s Matt Fries
calling tactics, Carrera won the first of its two races today
on Rhode Island Sound and wrapped up the day with a second.
Idler, owned by George David of Hartford, Conn., wound up
in a tie with Carrera in the eight-boat IMS Racing Class 1
after posting a 2-1 for the day.
Larson, who skippered Carrera two years
ago when it broke the Annapolis-to-Newport record, led a nearly
all-Rhode Island crew
through its paces and admitted that
he, too, had not sailed around-the-buoys since before last
December. That's when he joined the crew of the Volvo Ocean
Race entrant Assa Abloy for six of its nine legs around the
world.
"My focus has been distance racing,
and Carrera's focus has been distance racing, so now it's
fun to get a hall pass and come do this," said Larson,
who will turn 36 this week. "Today was one of the most
perfect summer days, with winds in the high teens and good
all-around racing."
Carrera beat Idler by only seven seconds
on corrected time in the first race, which covered 12 miles
on a windward-leeward course on Rhode Island Sound. Idler
came back to beat Carrera by a mere six seconds in race two.
"Idler definitely is the boat to
watch in our class," said Larson, "since its record
has been solid around here and its rating is so close to ours.
In the second race, Idler was about 10 minutes behind us and
we owe them about 10 minutes, so we knew it was close."
Race Week at Newport, which offers a
unique split format for racers, incorporates IMS, PHRF and
AMERICAP II handicap racing into its first half and one-design
championship racing into its second half. Sixty-six entries
are divided into nine classes for this opening segment, which
continues through Tuesday. (Some PHRF entrants are dual-scored
for AMERICAP II.) The one-design racing segment, scheduled
for next Friday through Sunday, will host 84 boats. A distance
race on Wednesday splits the two segments and will see 53
boats on the starting line.
