COME SAIL AWAY AT THE ROCHESTER YACHT
CLUB JO SAILING FESTIVAL
2 August 2002 (Rochester, NY/Portsmouth,
RI)- Come join the fun on August 9-11 as Rochester Yacht Club,
Rochester, NY hosts the USA Junior Olympic Festival-Rochester.
Young sailors who have not yet reached 18 years of age (except
Optimist Dingy sailors, who must not turn 16 before August
10) are invited to sail their Laser, Laser Radial, Club 420,
and Byte class boats. West Marine and Gill North America will
serve as sponsors.
US SAILING’s Junior Olympic Sailing
Program is in its sixth year with the goal of increasing participation
in youth sailing. Well over 15,000 sailors have participated
in events around the country since 1997. Rochester Yacht Club
has hosted an event in each of the six years. West Marine
has been on board since the program’s inception as well.
To apply, complete the entry form, which
is available along with the Notice of Race and other pertinent
documents at

fee, payable to
Rochester Yacht Club, should be sent to: Rochester Yacht Club,
Junior Olympic Festival, 5555 St. Paul Blvd., Rochester, NY
14617. Entry deadline is August 5th. A credit of $10.00 applies
to entries received or postmarked by August 5th. Late entries
will be accepted without any credit.
The entry fee for all classes is $ 45.00
per boat or competitor. A $10.00 credit will apply to Regatta
entries received or postmarked by August 5. The entry fee
includes an official USA Junior Olympic T-shirt, lunches both
Saturday and Sunday, dinner Saturday evening, clinics, Medals,
trophies, and other prizes. The fee, payable to the Rochester
Yacht Club, must be included with the entry form. The first
100 registrants will also receive a goodie bag filled with
lots of great stuff.
Membership in US SAILING is required
for each competitor (helmsman and crew for doublehanded classes).
The cost of a youth membership is $15.00 per year and a family
membership is $75.00 per year. Competitors may acquire membership
at the registration desk, although pre-registration is encouraged.
If you are already a member, bring your membership card to
registration. Competitors can join online at www.ussailing.org.
Family members should request individual membership cards
for each child by calling the US SAILING membership office
at 1-800-US SAIL-1.
Registration and check-in will be held
at the Rochester Yacht Club on Friday, August 9 with a competitor
briefing, clinics and festival to follow. The first of ten
races in the series will kick-off with the sound of the harbor
gun at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 10. The races will continue
into Sunday, August 11; however no races will begin after
1:00 p.m. on Sunday. The event will conclude with an awards
presentation at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 11.
Young sailors placing 1st through 3rd
in all divisions will receive USA Junior Olympic medals. Other
yacht club awards will be presented.
All coaches and other on the water support
personnel must check-in during the regular scheduled registration
periods. Coaches who bring proof of US SAILING certification
will be given appropriate access and recognition, and a free
hat.

USA Junior Olympic Sailing is a grass-roots
