International America’s Cup Class
Racing is fast becoming a familiar sight on San Francisco
Bay, arguably one of the best racing harbors in the world
and most certainly one that provided fabulous spectator viewing
of the magnificent IACC yachts racing on the Bay last weekend.
The inaugural Il Moro Trophy Regatta,
celebrating the first yacht ever built to the IACC (now the
America’s Cup Class or ACC) rules, Il Moro di Venezia
(sail number ITA-1), saw both ORACLE BMW Racing’s Grand
Prix 2000-current generation yacht and four vintage 1992-1995
generation yacht classes vie for this perpetual trophy on
San Francisco Bay.
While favorable conditions prevailed
for both Friday and Saturday’s racing, Sunday was canceled
due to high winds in the interests of safety. Results from
the weekend’s racing are as follows:
1st: ORACLE BMW Racing (USA 49), Larry
Ellison
2nd: NZL 14, Roberto Ferrarese
3rd tie: New Zealand 20, David and Karie Thomson, and Il Moro
(ITA-1), Peter Stoneberg
4th: Stars & Stripes (USA 11), John Sweeney
ORACLE BMW Racing helmed by Larry Ellison
enjoyed lead position for most of the weekend’s racing,
however Roberto Ferrarese of Bari, Italy, guest skipper aboard
NZL 14, demonstrated his superb helming skills in his attempts
to close the gap, achieving a great run from the older yacht.
In all, the class of ’92 yachts sailed close, tight
races.
“We’re really pleased with
the overall performance of the ’92 yachts this weekend,
“ said John Sweeney, co-founder, and co-owner of America’s
Cup Media LLC. “We had a few chutes blow out but nothing
major. It will be exciting when we have more Grand Prix class
yachts join the fleet as planned for our next regatta in May
2003. That should up the competition for Larry and his crew.”
IACCSF racing on San Francisco Bay will
take a hiatus until next year after the 2002/2003 America’s
Cup in New Zealand. Meanwhile, America’s Cup Media will
continue to actively grow the fleet via the addition of actual
America’s Cup Teams and private individuals who may
like to purchase a yacht and start a private IACC program.
More information on the purchase of IACC yachts can be found
at www.iaccsf.com /marketplace. The 2003 IACCSF Schedule is
as follows:
