ST. FRANCIS YACHT CLUB'S BIG BOAT
SERIES PRESENTED BY ROLEX
Lessons Learned Pay Off for Crews- Day 3
San Francisco, Calif. (September 14,
2002) - For the 109 boats sailing in the Big Boat Series presented
by Rolex, day three of racing was the day to perform under
pressure. Bay Area sailors will tell you that there isn’t
a tougher condition around than the 6-knot tide that churns
past the Golden Gate Bridge and St. Francis Yacht Club. There
is one race remaining to be sailed in the 38th running of
this legendary regatta and tomorrow will decide the winners
in each of 10 classes and of the St. Francis Yacht Club’s
five perpetual trophies. The past three days of sailing have
provided lessons that everyone will take into tomorrow’s
race.
“Tomorrow we need to make sure
we’re not over early, sail conservatively and get around
the course well,” said San Franciscan Phil Perkins,
who with Dave Wilson, campaigns the local favorite J/105 Good
Timin’. “No matter what, tomorrow will be a long
Bay tour and that’s fine with us. We’re confident
going into it.” Good Timin’ had a good day by
anyone’s standards - finishing 7-1. Perkins summarized
how his faithful crew of five locked up today’s races,
“Well, in the first race it was really shifty, probably
around 15-17 knots, so that mixed up the fleet. It was a good
race and we had Zuni Bear and Nantucket Sleigh on our radar.
In the second race we sailed pretty conservatively. Nantucket
Sleigh was over early, so we only had to keep eye on Zuni,
so we stayed with them tack for tack, and with good boat speed
we stayed ahead of Zuni the whole time.”

In the Americap II A class, the boat
that has drawn a lot of attention is Cita, the Schock 40 owned
by Cita Litt of Newport Beach. The 40-foot rocket ship has
rocked through the tides of San Francisco Bay under the guidance
of America’s Cup winner George Twist. While a bow man
aboard Intrepid in the 1970 America’s Cup in Newport,
Twist mastered the tricks of tide and those lessons have paid
off for the boat named after its owner, Cita. “My crew
are the best,” she said. “George is wonderful
in any condition and he thinks fast on his feet.” After
racing in 51 regattas in 2001, Litt and her crew are ready
for anything that the Bay Area can bring them, but there’s
one wish she’d like filled tomorrow. “We like
a lot of breeze,” she said. “Ideally, we’d
like 30 knots. That would be awesome!”
