Alchemy
Sails
The
new "Alchemy" was launched the afternoon
of April 23 and sailed in first sea trials a few
hours later. This new Andrews 77 was built by
Dencho Marine for Mary and Richard Compton and
is entered in the Newport to Ensenada Race on
April 25. During Wednesday afternoon's light air
sailing trials "Alchemy" hit a top speed
of 16.9 knots effortlessly reaching in about 12
knots of wind. In addition to the ultra-light
displacement of top modern racers, "Alchemy"
has a retracting keel that allows the 14 foot
draft to be reduced to 9.5 feet for harbor access
and water ballast to increase stability in breezier
conditions.
The
Comptons will race "Alchemy" this summer
in the Mackinac Races in the Great Lakes. Constructed
of heat cured carbon fiber/epoxy/balsa core laminates
by Dencho Marine, this Andrews design has a rig
from Hall Spars, winches and deck gear from Harken,
sails by Quantum, Annapolis and B&G sailing
instruments.
