INTER-COLLEGIATE SAILING
ASSOCIATION NAMES
2001/2002 ICSA/RONSTAN ALL-AMERICA SAILING TEAM
Doyle Named College
Sailor of the Year
NEWPORT, R.I. (June 18, 2002) –
The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association of North America (ICSA)
has announced the members of its 2001/2002 ICSA/Ronstan All-America
Sailing Team, the College Sailor of the Year, Sportsman of the
Year and winner of the Leonard M. Fowle Memorial Trophy for
the all-around best college team.
The ICSA/Ronstan All-America Sailing Team
recognizes individuals with exceptional racing records for the
college sailing year (fall and spring
seasons) just concluded. Members, determined annually by a panel
of representatives from each of the seven ICSA districts, are
named to the team as All-Americans, Women’s All-Americans
and/or All-American Crews. In all, 57 athletes were named to
the 2002 team at a banquet following the recent ICSA North American
Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii. Their names will be added
to the permanent ICSA Hall of Fame display located in the Robert
Crown Sailing Center at the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis, Md.).
College Sailor of the Year – Sean
Doyle
The Everett B. Morris Trophy, presented annually to the College
Sailor of the Year, has been awarded to Harvard University graduating
senior Sean Doyle (St. Petersburg, Fla.). A finalist for the
award in 2001, Doyle was also named an All-American for the
third year running. Doyle had a standout senior year with the
Crimson placing fifth at last fall’s National Singlehanded
Championship, then skippering the team to its second straight
North American Sloop Championship win. At the spring championships
in Hawaii, he helped Harvard to its first-ever ICSA North American
Team Race Championship win, which they claimed by posting a
perfect 17-0 score. His future sailing plans are to campaign
a Vanguard-15 on the team racing circuit.
Doyle is the third in a well-known sailing
family to earn the coveted College Sailor of the Year honors.
His father, Richard, received the accolade his senior year (1970)
at Notre Dame, and his uncle, Robbie, won it his senior year
(1971) at Harvard. Doyle learned to sail through the junior
program at St. Petersburg Yacht Club and cites his father as
his biggest influence. “He never coached me, his example
was all I needed.” Graduating with a degree in Economics,
Doyle will soon relocate to Connecticut where he will be working
for the Louis Dreyfus Corp. as a commodities trader.
Other finalists for the Everett B. Morris
Trophy were College of Charleston senior Marcus Eagan (New Orleans,
La.); Old Dominion University senior Brad Funk (Clearwater,
Fla.); and Tufts University sophomore Peter Levesque (Portland,
Maine).
Sportsman of the Year – Blaine Pedlow
The Robert H. Hobbs Trophy for the Outstanding Sportsman of
the Year was awarded to Blaine Pedlow (Bellingham, Wash.), a
graduating senior from the University of California - Berkeley.
Pedlow, an ICSA district President, was instrumental in helping
the student-run Berkeley team work out arrangements that would
allow them to sail out of the Treasure Island Sailing Center.
Adam Werblow (St. Mary’s City, Md.), head of the ICSA
selection committee, noted that Pedlow “was able to play
with and against the best competition in our sport and always
did so with a smile and the respect of his competitors.”
Pedlow, who learned to sail in Sabots
through the San Diego Yacht Club junior program, hopes to spend
the next year doing some 505 sailing and consulting work before
deciding whether to pursue an advanced degree in Environmental
Science. Characterizing the award as “special,”
he stressed the importance of the friendships he has made through
sailing. “It may sound hokey, but it’s incredible
that people thought of me for this award.” . Fowle Memorial
Trophy – Harvard University The Leonard M. Fowle Memorial
Trophy, recognizing the year’s best all-around performance
determined by points accumulated at ICSA North American championships,
was awarded to Harvard University for the second year in a row.
The Crimson sailors won both the ICSA North American Team Race
Championship and ICSA Sloop North American Championship and
placed second at the ICSA/Gill North American Dinghy Championship.
